Korleis er det å koma som ny til Noreg og etablera seg som kunstnar på den norske kunstscena?

Gjennom fleire år i Norge (mellom anna som student ved KHiB) har kunstnaren Kiyoshi Yamamoto sjølv opplevd kor vanskeleg situasjonen ofte er for kunstnarar med minoritetsbakgrunn.  

Til utstillinga på Hå gamle prestegard har han invitert med seg seks kunstnarar med utanlandsk bakgrunn. Yamamoto ønskjer å trengje gjennom eit system som har liten plass til desse kulturaktørane. Han seier at kunstnarane i utstillinga har meir til felles enn «bare lyst til å være i Norge». Dei har eit sterkt ønskje om å formidle kunsten deira og å vera med å bygge eit samfunn som tek kunsten og mangfaldet seriøst.

Kunstnarane er alle busette i Norge, men kjem frå Japan/Brasil, Spania, Polen, Mexico, Belgia, USA og Taiwan.

Yayamoto si grunnhaldning er inkluderande. I staden for å konfrontere satsar han heller på å forføra. Det fargesprakande, visuelle universet hans leier oss bort frå definerte kategoriar, prosjekta hans strittar mot å bli satt i bås. Ofte adresserer han utanforskap ved å viske det bort - alt kan høyre til. På Hå gamle prestegard set han sitt preg på utstillinga ved mellom anna å leggje eit knall rosa teppe i heile utstillingsalen.

Materialval er sentralt i Yamamoto sitt kunstnarskap. I utstillingsprosjekta dreg han publikum inn mot objekta, lokkar oss med fargar og teksturar, samstundes som at ein underliggande politisk og etisk haldning trer fram. Med utgangspunkt i boka On being included - Racism and Diversity in Institutional Life av Sara Ahmed, har Yayamoto denne gongen set seg føre å «hacke» kunstinstitusjonen, og bane veg for institusjonelle ramar som er meir inkluderande og mangfaldige.

Med utstillinga You’re probably wondering why I’m here (Ny i Norge) skaper og deler Yamamoto rom med ei gruppe kunstnarar som trass i utdanning og erfaring, endå slit med å få innpass i norsk kunstliv.

Kiyoshi Yamamoto

Yamamoto er kurator og initiativtakar til prosjektet.
Bidrag til utstillinga er eit svært tekstilarbeid i silke som heng fritt frå taket i mellomlåven. I tillegg har kunstnaren sett sitt preg på utstillinga ved å leggje eit knall rosa golvteppe i heile fjoset.

Kiyoshi Yamamoto er utdanna frå Kunst- og designhøgskolen i Bergen, Escola de Belas Artes, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil og Saint Martin's School of Arts and Design, London, England. Yamamoto har hatt ei rekkje separatutstillingar, mellom anna ved Buskerud Kunstsenter, Heimdal kunstforening, Norske Grafikere og Soft galleri. Innkjøpt av Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum i Trondheim, KODE i Bergen og den norske ambassaden i Brasilia.

 

Araiz Mesanza
f. 1983

Installasjon

Mesanza har bakgrunn frå illustrasjon, publikasjonar og historieforteljing.  Arbeider med teikning, måleri, skulptur. Uttrykket kjem ut av eit behov for reflektere over si eiga kunstnariske og personlege utvikling. Stikkord i kunstnarskapen er natur, folklore, isolasjon og vekst.

Ho har BFA frå Basque University of Art, Bilbao og spesialisering i illustrasjon frå kunst- og designsenteret Escola Massana, Barcelona. Araiz har vore frilans illustratør sidan 2009 og i 2011 var ho med å grunnlegge Ediciones Armadillo, eit kunstnerkollektiv og forlag.

Etter å ha flytta til Oslo hausten 2016, har Araiz halde fram med å arbeide som sjølvstendig illustratør og biletkunstnar.

Izabela Żółcińska
f. 1975
Polen

Måleri / teikning

Żółcińska arbeider tverrfagleg innan teikning, broderi, skulptur, måleri, installasjon. For kunstnaren er forsking og samarbeid sentralt og ho hentar inspirasjon frå fagfelt som anatomi, arkitektur, kognitiv vitskap og hydrobiologi.

Hennar arbeid har eit samspel med nærmiljøet. Ho set ofte spørsmålsteikn ved definisjonen av levande materie. I serien The Red List of Threatened Species, definerer ho trua arkitektur som ein del av planteriket. Gjennom denne definisjonen, plasserer ho arkitektoniske objekt som artar i evolusjonsprosessen.  Me desse teikningane tok ho del i den offentlige debatten rundt skjebnen til H- og Y-blokkene i Oslo.

Żółcińska er utdanna ved kunstakademiet i Poznań, Polen.

Lucía Aragón
f. 1988

Veggmåleri
Lucía Aragón arbeider med stadsspesifikke måleri, grafikk, teikning og lysinstallasjonar. Tema ho arbeider med er påverka av hennar meksikanske bakgrunn og hennar noverande forhold til Norden. Arbeida hennar undersøkjer kontrastane og forhaldet mellom mørkre og lyset. I utstillinga på Hå gamle prestegard vil ho laga ein stadsspesifikk installasjon.

Aragón studerte visuell kunst ved Interlochen Arts Academy (USA). Bachelorgraden har ho frå Universidad Iberoamericana (Mexico) og Mastergraden i Fine Arts er frå Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo (Norge). Ho har stilt ut ved Nasjonalmuseet-Arkitektur (Oslo), Tenthaus Oslo, TouScene, Galleri Ask, Mexikanisches Kulturinstitut (Wien), Sinaloa Museum of Art (Mexico).

Muga
/ Mike Ben hadj
f. 1978
Belgia

Måleri
Muga arbeider med veggmåleri og installasjonar, for det meste i det offentlege rom. Han var tidleg involvert i urban kunst og praksisen hans er påverka av graffiti og gatekultur. Dei siste åra har han arbeida meir med klassisk måleri.

I utstillinga syner kunstnaren kvardagsmåleri med ALERT som tema. "Alert" på fransk har fleire tydingar; det du seier om ein person som er forelska eller oppmerksom på ein anna person, eller det kan vise til ein fare. Eit signal om at eit hus står i brann til dømes.  ALERT kan tyda vaken, i live. Å ha eit vakent sinn.

Muga studerte biletkunst i Namur og Brussel.

Ric Francis
USA

Damn, This Neighborhood Is Changing

Til utstillinga på Hå syner Ric Francis arbeid frå prosjektet Norwegian but Not. Her utforskar han  dynamikken i statsborgarskap og etnisitet gjennom liva til nordmenn som tilhøyrar ein minoritet. Prosjektet utfordrar trua på at norsk, eller europeisk, er synonymt med kvitt. Prosjektet gjev ei stemme til det daglegdagse livet til minoritetsgrupper og legg vekt på kven dei avfotograferte er som individ.

Ric Francis er utdanna ved City University of New York, og har ein bachelor i Communications - Media Studies frå 1989. Ric studerte måleri før han gjekk over til fotojournalistikk.

Shian Yuan Yachi

Taiwan

Måleri
Yachi jobba i om lag 10 år som med tradisjonell tusjteikning i heimlandet. Måleria hennar er inspirert av levande liv og tek ofte opp situasjonen til innvandrarar. Men ho er g oppteken av korleis alle somme gonger kan oppleve seg sjølv om flyktningar i livet.

Eit anna tema som opptek kunstnaren er eigen identitet. Ho er fødd og oppvaksen i Taiwan, men då ho kom som immigrant til Norge måtte ho huke av på «kinesisk» på UD sitt skjema, sjølv om ho aldri har identifisert seg med det landet.

FOREDRAG: EATEN FISH
Fribyforfattar og teikneserieskapar Ali Dorani / Eaten Fish er ein prisvinnande iransk satireteiknar. Han kom til Stavanger gjennom ICORN sitt program for forfattarar og kunstnarar etter å ha levd dei fire siste åra i flyktningleir på Papua Ny-Guinea. Ved hjelp av teikningar byrja han å dokumentere dei vanskelege forholda i leiren. Me får høyra om reisa hans som flyktning og sjå arbeid han gjorde på ferda. Han trekk òg linjene fram til i dag og fortel om korleis det er å vera kunstnar og «ny i Norge». Kvelden starter med omvising i utstillinga YOU’RE PROBABLY WONDERING WHY I’M HERE (NY I NORGE). Foredraget er på engelsk. Kr. 150,-. Påmelding.

KUNSTNARSAMTALE: OM AVSTAND OG NÆRVÆR MED MARA SOLA OG TERESA PUIG
Teresa Puig reiste frå heimlandet sitt i år 2000 og har nytta sine opplevingar med avstand til familien i tidlegare kunstprosjekt. Mara Sola har òg arbeida med tema der grenser, sårbarhet og avstand blir uttrykt i akvarellpapir og objekt. Puig og Sola nyttar utstillinga YOU’RE PROBABLY WONDERING WHY I’M HERE (NY I NORGE) og fortel om deira eigne opplevingar som emigrerte kunstnarar. Samtalen er på engelsk. Vanleg inngangsbillett gjeld.

Welcome to the opening of new exhibitions at Hå gamle prestegard 14 November at 14.00.

What is it like to come to Norway as a newcomer and establish yourself as an artist in the Norwegian art scene?

During several years in Norway (among other things as a student at KHiB), the artist Kiyoshi Yamamoto has experienced how difficult the situation is for artists with a minority background. He has now invited six artists with foreign backgrounds to this exhibition at Hå gamle prestegard. Yamamoto wishes to penetrate a system that seemingly has little space for these cultural actors. He says that the artists in the exhibition have more in common than "just wanting to be in Norway". They have a strong desire to show their art and to help build a society that takes art and diversity seriously. All the artists live in Norway, but come from Japan / Brazil, Spain, Poland, Mexico, Belgium, USA and Taiwan.

Yayamoto's basic attitude is inclusive. Instead of confronting, he prefers to seduce. His colorful visual universe leads us away from defined categories, his project attempts to avoid strict classifications. He often addresses alienation by wiping it away, such that anything can be included. At Hå gamle prestegard he has made his mark on the exhibition by, amongst other things, laying a bright pink carpet in the entire exhibition hall.

Material selection is central to Yamamoto's artistry. In the exhibition project, he draws the audience in towards objects, entices us with colors and textures, at the same time as an underlying political and ethical attitude emerges. Based on the book On being included - Racism and Diversity in Institutional Life by Sara Ahmed, Yayamoto sees himself as "hacking" the art institution, to pave the way for institutional frameworks to be more inclusive and diverse.

With the exhibition You’re probably wondering why I’m here (New in Norway), Yamamoto creates and shares rooms with a group of artists who, despite their education and experience, still struggle to gain access to Norwåy’s cultural life.

Kiyoshi Yamamoto

Yamamoto is the curator and initiator of the project.
His contribution to the exhibition is a large silk textile that hangs freely from the ceiling in the mellomlåv room. In addition, the artist has made his mark on the exhibition by laying a bright pink carpet in the entire hall.

Kiyoshi Yamamoto is a graduate of the Bergen School of Art and Design, Escola de Belas Artes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Saint Martin's School of Arts and Design, London, England. Yamamoto has had a number of solo exhibitions, including at Buskerud Kunstsenter, Heimdal kunstforening, Norske Grafikere and Soft gallery. Purchased by Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum in Trondheim, KODE in Bergen and the Norwegian Embassy in Brasilia.

 

Araiz Mesanza
b. 1983
Spain

Installation
Mesanza has a background in illustration, publications and storytelling. She works with drawing, painting and sculpture. The works come from a need to reflect upon her own artistic and personal development. Key words in her artistic process are nature, folklore, isolation and growth.

Mesanza has a BFA from Basque University of Art, Bilbao with a specialisation in illustration from the art and design center Escola Massana, Barcelona. Araiz has been a freelance illustrator since 2009 and in 2011 she co-founded Ediciones Armadillo, an artist collective and publisher.

After moving to Oslo in the autumn of 2016, Araiz has continued to work as an independent illustrator and visual artist.

               

Izabela Żółcińska
b. 1975
Poland

Painting / drawing
Żółcińska works interdisciplinary with drawing, embroidery, sculpture, painting and installation. For this artist, research and collaboration are central and she draws inspiration from disciplines such as anatomy, architecture, cognitive science and hydrobiology.

Her work interacts with the local community. She often questions the definition of living matter. In the series The Red List of Threatened Species, she defines true architecture as part of the plant kingdom. Through this definition, she places architectural objects as species in the evolutionary process. Żółcińska used these drawings in the public debate about the fate of the H- and Y-blocks in Oslo.

Żółcińska is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts at Poznań, Poland.

 

Lucía Aragón
b. 1988
Mexico

Wall painting
Lucía Aragón works with city-specific painting, graphics, drawing and light installations. The themes she works with are influenced by her Mexican background and her current relationship with the Nordic countries. Her work examines the relationship and contrasts between dark and light. In the exhibition at Hå gamle prestegard, she will create a site-specific installation.

Aragón studied visual arts at the Interlochen Arts Academy (USA). She has a bachelor's degree from the Universidad Iberoamericana (Mexico) and a master's degree in Fine Arts from the Oslo Academy of the Arts (Norway). She has exhibited at the National Museum of Architecture (Oslo), Tenthaus Oslo, TouScene, Galleri Ask, Mexikanisches Kulturinstitut (Vienna) and Sinaloa Museum of Art (Mexico).

 

Muga
/ Mike Ben hadj
b. 1978
Belgium

Painting
Muga works with murals and installations, mostly in the public space. His early work was connected with urban art and his practice is influenced by graffiti and street culture. In recent years he has worked more with classical painting.

In the exhibition, the artist examines everyday painting with ALERT as the theme. "Alert" in French has several meanings; what you say about a person who is in love or aware of another person, or, it may point to a danger. A message that a house is on fire, for example. ALERT can mean awake, to be alive. To have a watchful mind.

Muga studied visual arts in Namur and Brussels.             

 

Ric Francis
USA

Damn, This Neighborhood Is Changing

For the exhibition at Hå, Ric Francis shows work from his project Norwegian but Not. Here he explores the dynamics of citizenship and ethnicity through the lives of Norwegians who belong to a minority. The project challenges the idea that Norwegian, or European, is synonymous with white. The project gives a voice to the daily life of minority groups and emphasizes the individuality of the people photographed.

Ric Francis is a graduate of the City University of New York, and has a bachelor's degree in Communications - Media Studies from 1989.

He studied painting before moving on to photojournalism.        

 

Shian Yuan Yachi
b. 1983
Taiwan

Painting
Yachi worked for about 10 years with traditional ink drawing in her home country. Her painting is inspired by everyday life and often addresses the situation of immigrants. But she is also concerned with how everyone can sometimes experience themselves as refugees in life.

Another theme that has engaged the artist is her own identity. She was born and raised in Taiwan, but when she came to Norway as an immigrant she had to tick "Chinese" on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' form. However, Yachi has never identified with that country.

LECTURE: EATEN FISH
Friby author and cartoonist Ali Dorani / Eaten Fish is an award-winning Iranian satirist. He came to Stavanger through ICORN's program for writers and artists after living for four years in a refugee camp in Papua New Guinea. Using drawings, he began to document the difficult conditions in the camp. We shall hear about his time as a refugee and see the work he did during the journey. Dirani also progresses to today and explains what it is like to be an artist and "new in Norway". The evening starts with a tour of the exhibition YOU’RE PROBABLY WONDERING WHY I’M HERE (NEW IN NORWAY).

ARTIST CONVERSATION: ABOUT DISTANCE AND PRESENCE WITH MARA SOLA AND TERESA PUIG
Teresa Puig left her home country in 2000 and has benefited from her experiences, using the distance from her family in art projects. Mara Sola has also worked with themes where boundaries, vulnerability and distance are expressed in watercolors and objects.
Puig and Sola use the exhibition YOU’RE PROBABLY WONDERING WHY I’M HERE (NEW IN NORWAY) and tell about their own experiences as artists who have emigrated from their homelands.
The conversation is in English. Regular exhibition entrance fee.

The exhibition has come about in collaboration with the mentor program "Here and there" by Marie Skeie and Motaz al Habbash and is supported by Norsk kulturråd, Fritt ord and Billedkunstnernes vederlagsfond.
